KONA – DAY 7: LAST DAY IN HAWAII

After my Kona Day 5 post on Friday, I didn’t go much yesterday… just the small matter of the Ironman World Championship. I posted a separate Ironman World Championship Race Recap if you want to see how that went. Other than the race, there was nothing else to write about so we move on to Sunday, day 7 and the final day here on the Big Island.

To be honest, this will be a pretty boring post but I figured it best to wrap up the Kona series otherwise it would seem strange just ending before the race.

Last night was the best I have slept since I got here, I didn’t go to bed until almost midnight but slept straight through to 7am like a log. Not too surprising considering the effort the body put in yesterday.

I spent the first couple of hours chilling in the room, I had already packed most of my stuff on Friday to take the pressure off doing it this morning. I just needed to pack the bike up.

The main task I had for myself today was to head out and take a photo of my medal with lava rock behind it and rather conveniently there was plenty of lava flows around.

Checkout was at 10am which felt super early and not the most convenient but it is was it is. Once checked in I spent the rest of the day relaxing and letting the legs recover around the pool, grabbing some nachos for lunch. That was more or less it for my day, not the most exciting thing to write about but I spent 7 hours sitting out by the pool getting my last dose of summer sun for a long time. The next time we have summer sun back in the UK will most likely be May/June 2023.

On the way to drop the rental off at the airport I stopped off at a point I had driven (and biked yesterday) passed plenty of times and thought I would like to stop and take a look. It was called Scenic Point and it lived up to its name.

It was a fitting end to my time here in Hawaii, seeing more of the natural beauty the island has to offer.

Back at the airport after a really enjoyable 6 days here, I had forgotten how small and low-key the airport here is, a far cry from the big airports I will be stopping off at on the way home in San Francisco and Heathrow. In fact, this journey home is one I am not looking forward to one bit. I depart Hawaii at 21:10 local time (08:10am Monday UK time) and land at Heathrow at 06:55am Tuesday.
