KONA – DAY 5: BIKE, HELMET & GEAR CHECK-IN

On my fifth day here in Hawaii I turned my attention to the actual reason I am out here, the race which is now tomorrow! The plan for today is to head out for an easy 40 min ride and just as easy 15 min run off the bike to shake out the legs one last time.

I was up at 5:30am today after a really good sleep, I had breakfast in the room and then went out on the bike just before 8am.

It was nice riding out there on the Queen K, a part of tomorrow’s bike route but also in the knowledge that this is the final training session of this block and most likely my last bit of training for a triathlon.

Once I was done with the bike and run I finished packing up the transition bags with the bike shoes and sunglasses. I spent a little while writing my Kona Gear block which is scheduled to go live just as the race starts tomorrow.

I didn’t have anything else planned between now and 2pm so I went out and sat around the pool for a couple of hours before going over to the Clubhouse where I had lunch yesterday.

I was very unimaginative and went for the same burger as yesterday, I brought it back to the room so I could sit in peace and in the cooler air con.

I had picked the 3pm – 4pm time slot for bike racking. So I left here at 2:15pm and drove into Kona with the bike and bike & red gear bags.

Now is when things started to feel real, seeing all the bikes lined up and gear bags ready to go, this gave me a sense of just how big this one is going to be.

After racking my bike and dropping off the gear I had a quick look around the swim start and course. This is the view of the bay I had seen countless times on YouTube videos and now here I am looking out at it ahead of swimming that famous course tomorrow morning.

I made a quick call to Wal-Mart to grab a pizza for my evening meal and headed back to Waikoloa to eat that, get showered and ready for an early night and a big day tomorrow.
