IRONMAN 70.3 MALLORCA 2019 GEAR

Now I am all packed and ready to fly out to Mallorca in the morning, I thought I would post my Ironman 70.3 Mallorca gear. Last week I posted my HOPES & DREAMS for race day, let’s hope this gear can help me deliver on those dreams.

Pre Race

Race morning breakfast for me is a tried and very well tested thing. In fact, every morning I have porridge for my breakfast. Every race day is the same as every early morning training session. Every international race I do the same thing, I will take the travel kettle and a few pots of porridge just in case the hotel breakfast opens too late or the hotel does not have a kettle in the room. I find it is always best to be prepared for the worst just in case.

Once fueled I head off to the start, usually with a bottle of SiS Go Energy to top up the electrolytes.

Race Fuelling

My race nutrition for Mallorca is shown below, again these have all been well used in training. I have used SiS Go Energy Gels for the last three years and find my stomach copes well with them.

I will take a SiS Caffeine shot 30 minutes before the start of the swim. On the bike leg, I take out two 900ml bottles with a mix of Maurten 320 Drink. I use one and a half sachets with water. This is a new addition to the bike, I have found using Maurten gives me more energy to push hard for longer.

I will also take five SiS Go Energy Gels on the bike to take every 30 mins as well as three for the run, again to take every 30 mins. Along with the gels I have three flapjacks for on the bike to give something more solid to eat.

Post race I always take my protein shaker with some SiS Rego Protein to take as soon as I get my white bag back. This is something I have done after every race. Giving the body a protein boost around 30 mins post-race really helps the muscles to regrow and recover.

Swim Gear

This year I will be racing in the Zoot Ali’i 18 Racesuit. I have gone for a sleeveless option this year, the thinking is, this will give a little more flexibility when swimming in the wetsuit and who doesn’t love showing the guns off right?

I am also wearing the Rymora calf sleeves under the wetsuit, the Wahoo TICKR heart rate monitor and using the Garmin Forerunner 930 watch to track my race.

More swim specific, I use body glide around my neck, wrists and ankles. This helps to first, stop the wetsuit rubbing my neck and secondly applying it around the wrists and ankles helps the wetsuit slide off in T1. Goggles, I have gone for Zoggs Predator Flex goggles, these have a bigger lens than my previous goggles which should help me with sighting out at sea.

Speaking of wetsuits, I am using my HUUB Archimedes II GB Edition wetsuit. I got this last year and used it for Ironman Staffs and Ironman UK. The wetsuit was great and like most, I need the added buoyancy to help my swimming.

T1 Gear

Most of the bike gear below has been mentioned above, once in T1 I will swap out the swim gear for my bike gear. I am using the Garmin Edge 1000 to track the bike leg, this is just so I can keep a track on my cadence, ave speed and distance. One day I will be tracking my power output once I get a power meter.

I have the Kask Mojito helmet and Fizik R£B shoes, swapping the Zoggs goggles for the Oakley Jawbreaker Cavendish edition glasses.

Bike wise, I am yet to move to a TT bike, so in the meantime, I will be using my Giant Propel Advanced 1 road bike.

T2 Gear

So, the final leg, the run. Time to ditch the cycle shoes and helmet for my Nike Vaporfly 4% shoes. So far this year, I have raced in these shoes five times, running a marathon PB, 5k PB and my three fastest 10k times, I hoping for big things from these shoes in the half marathon on Saturday. I have stuck with the standard laces rather than going for elastics.

I have pictured my Tiux socks here but I am still not 100% on whether I will wear socks for the bike and the run or just the run or neither. Not sure I fancy running a half marathon sockless. Choice choice….
